I was born in Israel, am of Polish descent, speak fluent English and Hebrew, and my stomach is one hundred percent Italian. No idea how that happened, but pasta, as far as I'm concerned, is a food group all on its own. Grazie for making me hungry, mate. Happy 2025.

Welcome aboard! I've got some kind of gluten sensitivity, but I take the hit every damn time - and I never regret the consequences! My pleasure. Happy New Year back to you, mate. Make sure to carb load the first few days to set you in good stead

I'm also fortunate enough to live in a place that has food-flavoured food, no added ingredients. It's why I'm so strong, despite my early life eating English crap, or worse, Irish crap.

My kids, brought up on a wholesome diet with only moderate diversions into sugary stuff, are so strong they're terrifying.

When I return to England straight from my girlfriend's parents' house British food tastes like grit for days. I feel like such a better person when I'm eating off the fat of their land.

haha I'll try and squeeze out a few myself, and we'll chuck them into a battle royale and see how the chips fall

I'm sure they will be atrocious spawn, but please do go ahead and reproduce, as the world needs more like you. Not sure why, but there's a Californian billionaire standing next to me with a loaded gun and he told me to say that: we need more of the very best people, just like you.

haha it wouldn't be the first time I've made love at the well-armed behest of a Catalina wine baron, and I dare say it won't be the last. I will keep you in my thoughts, as the act draws to a disappointing close, in the hope that my offspring might be created in your image

The article is funny and precise. And i do agree everyone, specially americans, should raise the bar on the quality of produce that conforms its diet. Trump, among other daunting symbolic representations, is a heavy promoter of fast food and zero cooking skills. Not good. “Thou art what thou eatest.”

Most of it is true, Sam (Italian mamma commenting here). But Italians are usually extremely conservative, so much so that they deem a variation on their mammas' recipes like blasphemy, and mercilessly label all food other than those they grew up with, as "porcherie/schifezze" (muck/filth), even food from celebrated cuisine cultures such as the French, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and so on. And I don't think we look or feel better than the Brits, not at all, those carb-fests aren't healthy in the long run. At least, in UK and the Netherlands, where I currently live, you can discover and taste many wonderful dishes from all around the world. Trust me, you can have too much pasta and pizza. Happy New Year, dear Sam!

I consider it an honour and a privilege to have most of an Italian mumma's approval! That is definitely true. I had a paragraph in draft about the rigidity of the rules. That's also true, you can't decent food from anywhere else in the world, even in Milan. I treasure a nice curry or kebab when I return to England. Maybe it's not so much that you guys look and feel better, just that in the UK, we look and feel worse. I will admit after a 2 month stint of being forcefed, I do like regaining control of my own dinner plate. That said, I do believe there is no such thing as too much pasta and pizza. I must dig in on that position. Happy new year to you mate!

In its TV show "Jamie's Italy", Jamie Oliver once said "They're so fascists about their food", or something to that extent, and he's right! And what about finding a not even fine, but at least acceptable cuppa, in Italy? When I was young, tea was considered a remedy for stomach ache, not like the divine beverage that it is, and I used to feel so alone in my tea-flavoured gentle obsession, a packet of Twinings' Earl Grey was like the Holy Grail to me! About pasta, did you know that Mussolini promoted the cultivation of rice, because he was convinced that rice-eating peoples were braver and more suitable to become good soldiers? Instead, he had to make do with a bunch of macaroni-munching mamaboys. Well, serves him right, let's defeat Fascism one fusillo at a time!

It's not Jamie's Italy, it's mine! I know what he means, they do like things how they like it. But I don't trust Jamie's tongue, he's a jowly serpent who made millions appropriating Italian food and selling crap pasta to clueless Engys.

haha you are bang on on the tea front. I've not made one half-decent cuppa over here. Tea doesn't work over here. There's something in the water - and you can't get decent milk. I'm glad supped upon the tea of your dreams.

haha I didn't know that. I can see where he's coming from. I can't imagine raising a sword after a tray-full of pasta al forno. That's the situation I find myself trying to lift my pen in right now. I've certainly done my bit as an anti-paste anti-fascisit today. Any dip in quality in this week's article is directly due to Italian food. But we must make a stand for what's right

I disapprove of the “fascist with their food.” Neurosis for quality pertains to a centuries tradition; fascism starts in 1922. Besides, it is not an appropriate thing to say in these times.
